I got asked to play a role in a short film being made by the graduate students at my college. In the scene, I have to embrace/make out with my 'mistress'. I haven't met this girl yet, and I'm normally a tech guy- not an actor. My question is for the actors- how should I approach this? When the director says cut, should I keep kissing for the sake of continuity, or just immediately break off? I don't want this person to think I think they're gross (they probably aren't), and I don't want them to think I'm a wierdo, either. Any tips for pretending with somebody you don't know?

I just don't want it to look awkward on camera.

When the director yells cut, you stop kissing. Bottom line. She will not be offended. You are only kissing for the benefit of the camera, so when it stops rolling, you stop acting. Of course you don't have to shove her away. Just end the kiss at that time like you would normally end a kiss, and slowly let go of her.

assuming you have a director with some idea of what he is doing, he should communicate to you and all of the other actors exactly what he is looking for from the shot. Having done a few myself i would suggest just being frank with this girl and discuss it, she may be in the same situation. Break a leg!

Acting is just that - acting. You are not making out with her for real, you are just kissing her for a scene.
Acting is all a state of mind. It is hard for a lot of people because you have to put yourself in a different situation and different circumstances in an instant. If you are good at it - you can go from crying to enraged in a minute - and you can go from just talking to a girl to kissing her passionatly in 10 seconds.

when the director says "Cut", hold the kiss for a beat, then break off gently. seems like that would be the polite way to do it.

There is a story about George C. Scott the actor who played General Patton.
During the filming of another movie, he was about to play an erotic love scene with an actress while both were partially nude.
Ever the professional, Mr. Scott warned the young actress,
"Madam, please forgive me if I get an erection...
and madam... please forgive me if I don't".
I thought you could use that.

Be professional when the director says stop you stop...hope for a retake if she's hot however.
I always pretended she was my girlfriend at the time.

If in doubt, ask the Director, put all the responsibility in his/her hands. They should tell you when to kiss, how to kiss and when to stop kissing...dont lose any sleep over it.
