I know drugs don't cure all people's depression, but if they did help people, then surely that just proves depression is just an "imblance of chemicals" in your brain. So technically you're not really sad,- its just this "imbalance?"

While depression can be biological, reactive depression is a combination of both biological AND situational depression. Usually much more serious.

that is 100% accurate. depression is caused by an chemical imbalance. there is a difference between depression and just being sad. just because someone is sad doesnt make them depressed. depression is an actual illness because of the chemical imbalance. people who have a great job, make lots of money, have a great family...everything is going great in their life, can "feel" sad and not understand why. that is depression. on the other hand, a person who has alot going wrong in life, nothing goes right, someone dies, they lose their job, etc. are sad. they KNOW why they are sad. thats the difference.

Interesting question.

But... Even knowing that depression is an imbalance in the brain doesn't change the fact that people aren't just "sad" they are having trouble functioning in everyday life.

I wish there was one drug that could "cure" every single person's depression, but there isn't. Just like no two people are alike-no two brains are alike. And the triggers are different for everyone.

I personally think that all emotions are due to brain chemistry. So if sadness is associated with a certain imbalance of chemicals, does that make it not real? What do you define as real sadness?

there are different types of depression, when u are clinically depressed that means it became chronic to cause such chemical imbalance in the brain, thus, needing medications for it, but being sad or depressed about something that u can explain and u still able to go about ur activities of daily living then it is depression that will go away in time...and by diversional activities...etc

Yes, depression is definitely a medically identifiable disease that is caused by a chemical imbalance in our brains. I don't think any doctor would deny that anymore nowadays.

What ever way you want to look at it depression is an illness, and nothing to do with chemicals, and is very treatable with the right help and medication, imbalanced is a wrong word to use anyway as this could cause some people to be offended
