We have a level of 6.2 which I understand is just slightly high. We are trying to sell our house, so want to get it below the 4.0 suggested without putting any $ into it. We are looking for suggestions for making the house safer, of course, but want to do it ourself.

Sure.

But it may not get it to the level you want.

Also, you would have to say in your disclosure that the radon level is 6.2 anyway. The open window doesn't count in that regard. Although the buyer may understand and not care.

surely some waterproofing concepts can decrease radon. I paintings for a basement waterproofing organization noted as super Lakes Waterproofing that's based out of Michigan. we've a device besides as others around the rustic that use a product common as sodium bentonite clay. This clay is going on the outdoors of the homestead and creates an envelope around the homestead. this accretion would be approximately 6-8" thick and is used for waterproofing, lowering radon emissions, and nuclear an infection. this methodology would not purely water resistant your basement, in spite of the indisputable fact that it would block radon getting into your place. be at liberty to envision out our internet website and you will examine up extra in this product and our platforms. the place are you placed at?

For selling your home, if you have to disclose the radon problem the only fix is a proper ventilation system (if your state requires it). However yes, leaving a basement window open will help, but that won't get you around a third party testing.

Do some research on lowering the radon level or disclose the 6.2 level. Your conscience will thank you for it later.

you can install a radon mitigation system, that includes a fan. do a search on google or yahoo for "radon mitigation" and it will give you some choices.

also, the EPA can give some advice: http://www.epa.gov/radon/pubs/hmbyguid.html#6.a.
