Funny thing - I had totally forgotten but my friends taught me again last night.
You have 7 piles. 1 with 1 card, 1 with 2, 1 with 3 and so on. Turn up one card for every pile. Take the deck of cards and place it at the side and turn up one.
The goal of the game is to match (color opposite) cards in sequence then try to go out by getting them all in sequence starting from the ace.
Try playing it on your computer if you have more problems.

There are about 250 ways to play solitaire. You can get a book of all these games from Hoyle.
The game of using seven stacks of cards alternating red and black in numerical sequence is called "Klondike."
There are variations of solitaire where you can use several decks of cards simultaneously.

yeah, you put the red cards under the black ones and the black ones under the red in descending order, then on top there are four piles (one for each suit) and up put the cards in ascending order, starting with the ace, until all the cards in those four piles.
