You can go to a home improvement store, and purchase ant traps; which are little like flat boxes the give out a scent; which attracts the ants to go inside. The trap basically dissolves the ants leaving no mess. I think they last for about two weeks, maybe more. Once the times up, just throw the trap away. They are very cheap, and I think you get 100 traps per box. You can stick them anywhere even on walls. And they have no harmful substance to animals

Here's a couple ideas. There are many products available on the market today that are effective. Another good remedy that many don't know about, is to mix a solution 1 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of water and wash the surface were the ants enter. The ants don't like the smell of the vinegar, and more often than not will not return. This is my preferred method because it is always available, cost effective, non-toxic and safe to use on almost any surface.

Terro brand ant traps-non toxic combo. of boric acid (Borax) and sugar. At first they get a little worse as they come running for it, but they take it back to the nest and soon the problem is gone. Where I live ants are a problem everywhere in this city, everyone I know. So I just leave the little Terro traps out year 'round, replacing them every 3 months for effectiveness. You get 6 or 8 for about $6.00, and even when my mischevious kitten got into one and licked it, it was not harmful to him.

Follow the trail to where it begins, spraying with ammonia or Windex, at the beginning of the trail liberally dust with talcum powder. Wipe away the dead ants and the trail at the same time, the powder will confuse them and deter their return. Additionally I would spray around the outside of the home and windows with an organic bug repellent made of floral extracts( like Sevin or Bug be Gone)available at most home and garden stores. There are lots of recipes to make your own but I have never had much success with them. Good Luck!

Make a simple (sugar-water) syrup then add some boric acid(Roachproof) to it-Recipe:1tbs of acid to 4 cups of syrup; Go outside and look for active ant-hills then pour some down each hill. Then place small barriers of syrup in ant tracks and if you're concearned about unintentional exposier, get creative about only allowing the small ant to have access to this very appealing meal.

When we lived in Alabama we had ants (and ants and ants!) We approaced the problem several ways. I don't know if the combination was what worked or one of the things we did.....
we mixed Borax (found in the laundry section-powder) and sugar, spread it near the 'hills'. The ants take it to the queen and it kills her and the nest. We also took a shovelful of ants from hill "A" and put them in hill "B" and a vice versa. They have fought themselves to extinction. Pouring ammonia in the hill killed them. and my sons found that ants send a 'scout' out first (usually-not always) and that if they killed the scout and left the 'corpse' there another scout would come, take it back to the nest, and we'd never see ants in that particular 'area'.
Just some suggestions.

Buth the ant traps. They don't trap andts but contain a food that is poisinous to the ants. The come and get the food and bring it back to the nest and kill the queen...The traps are sealed to other animals so they are safe for your pets.

best not to use chemicals. they kill .bigger things just get toxic sick later.
wipe the trails with hot water. rinse them down the drain.
keep all sweets and oils tightly sealed.
takes awhile to change the trails.
saturate the ground where they start from with water wait for all tot come up and then spray outside if you must spray.

I heard baby powder works and I also heard something about coffee that has been freshly ground.

Tea Tree Oil should make them leave too
