Books, my friend.
Everytime I see someone who has a computer problem or has trouble identifying the parts of a computer system, I think to myself, "Why doesn't this person just go out and buy a couple of books?"
Some people think that they don't need to buy books because of the Internet, but they're wrong. The Internet searches work best if you have some idea of what you're searching for. In the very least, a book will give you a starting point on what to look for when you want more information on a subject.
I always recommend at least 3 types of PC books - four if they don't know anything about computers. Most people should have one book on the operating system, one book on PC hardware, and one book on network/internet security. The fourth book is for learning about the different parts which make up any computer system, so that the computer does not seem like some strange box.
PC Magazine had a pretty good book on learning how a computer works. You can also check out the HowStuffWorks website too.
Check out the websites of these computer book publishers to see what other books are available: Sams, Coriolis Group, Que, Osborne.
(Just Google search to find the sites.)

There are a number of good software programs that are freeware that will give all that info. I like using PC Wizard 2006:
www.cpuid.org They also have other free programs for getting info about your computer. Another free program is BELARC which also gives you similar info. If you don't mind spending money an excellent program is EVEREST. SANDRA 2007 is also excellent.
Good Luck

Download Sandra from www.download.com. You'll be able to run some benchmarks too, even with the free version.
