Of course its possible! Question is, is your question accurate? Consider that every organized society has some sort or religion. Even the Neanderthals buried their dead with artifacts - a religious belief in the "afterlife"?

Religion was and still is a tool to control / motivate / excite / bind together the masses.
(just look at the last USA elections, and it all becomes clear on how religion is used with an agenda, and not for personal purposes.)
Religion is a man's invention. God is a man's invention; and God does not exist, otherwise it would make itself known with less subtle ways, in which this subtleness gives room for humans to kill over it's interpretations.
And another thing: If god really existed, why did he create such a screwed up animal as the Human being?

It certainly is possible- but did they have the mentality capable to conceive such a thing for that specific purpose? It is my contention that they didn't or we could confirm it because someone always slips up when first they practice to deceive!
Personally, I 'll put my trust in God on this one! LOL
