I am from Oklahoma and I am having a debate with a Texan on which state has the most shoreline. I know Oklahoma does not have a coastline, but we do have the most man made lakes, so that is my question.

The claims of Oklahoma having a lot of shoreline is deceptive. Oklahoma travel brochures and Oklahoma state tourism websites like to make a claim of extreme amounts of shoreline. True, counting the shoreline along its lakes, including its 200 manmade lakes, you'll arrive at a figure of 11,611 miles of shoreline. However, Texas has many lakes as well PLUS Gulf of Mexico shoreline, so I would think that Texas would top Oklahoma.

Where it ranks is difficult to determine. Michigan certainly would have more shoreline than Oklahoma. Michigan has Great Lakes shoreline on four Great Lakes, which amounts to 3,288 miles of shoreline. Plus, Michigan has 11,000+ inland lakes. I am not sure what the shoreline length of the inland lakes is, but assuming each inland lake has just ONE mile of shoreline, that would put Michigan's shoreline length at 14,288+ miles.

Its true that Texas has a lot, but I wouldnt care if it had more or not.

The debate should not be between TX & OK, but OK and others or TX & others.

I would accept any view that might put Alaska or Texas over OK.

I might even consider CA, though there has been discussions about us having more than CA.

That still leaves 46 states to see about.
