the #1 cause of baldness is a horrible gene. Can pass from EITHER mom or dad's side of family - when guy reaches puberty , the hormone dihydrotestosterone interacts with hair follicle cellular receptors, giving them instructions to gradually die & stop producing new hairs. This is THE cause of men's & women's hair loss, period. Other causes are so rare. This same hormone excites hair follicles in the rest of the body , face, pubes, chest, limbs, to grow thick hairs which stop after a certain length.
Gene therapy is the answer to this horrible disease. I would take all the billions spent on cancer, AIDS, MS, etc. & put it all on male pattern baldness. they have never really made all all-out WAR ON BALDNESS. but they should.
Reason is that big business is not convinced that they will make enough profits from curing men's baldness. If they felt it profitable, dammit, you would already see a real remedy available.

Male pattern baldness is typically inheirited from the mother's side, so look to your mother's family....although you could still keep your hair. Stress, some medications, and some illnesses can also cause hair loss. Alopecia is a skin disorder that often causes total, premature baldness, as well.

It increases your odds of baldness, but it's no guarantee. I can't list it all here, but Mendel's Theories on Genetics are pretty well explained here: http://anthro.palomar.edu/mendel/mendel_1.htm
Basically, the gene is carried on the X-chromosome (mother's side) but how dominant the gene is depends on a number of factors.

Heredity. My mother was bald and I am kinda light on top, so it comes from your mothers side.

the leading cause of baldness is genetic disposition to it. there's nothing that can stop it or cause it to occur other than genetics.
