I don't think it's possible to 'consciously' hear only what you want to hear. That implies you're aware enough recognize and yet tune out what you don't want to hear which calls upon your short term memory to do tricks it ain't prepared for. I am, however, certain that people manipulate what they hear to serve their own purposes. That, I'm guilty of.

Yes. I do it all the time when multiple people are talking or there is a radio and a telelvision on at the same time. I also do this when my mom is talking on occassion! ;)

yes when I drink! I swear this girl was talking crap behind my back but then I found out she didn't even know my name so I am not sure how I heard her say my name several times. very funny I think i almost kicked her ***!
