My grandmother (who has since passed away) used to make dogs out of hangers and yarn. Nobody asked her how she made them and know that she is gone we need to know how they are made and have noone to ask.

I don't have a pattern, but I know what you're talking about. I think you can still find it at some of the larger craft shops like Micheals.
If all else fails, and you have one that your Grandma made. Take it apart and see how she did it. I'm sure she woudn't mind
I'm pretty sur e it's two hangers bent so the hook part is the the head and the other the back. Then you wind yarn around your hand and tie it in the middle to tie onto the wire. That's my guess anyway.
Good luck on your search. I know how important it is for you to find the pattern.

I know exactly what you mean because I made some a long time ago. But I can't remember how I made them. And I gave then all away, so I don't even have one to look at. They are so cute, though. I hope someone can help you.

Have you checked your local library?
They have craft books from the 70's you may find the pattern in one.
also used book stores or on line book stores that specialize in older crafting books..I have seen these at craft fairs also
you might try about.com they have a wide variety of things on line info and links.
