Yes it was stupid. It was even stupider to pull our funding out of Afghanistan leaving that region to fall to the taliban.

The Mujaheddin are not the Taliban. The Soviets were defeated in 1989 but the Taliban weren't created until a few years later. Had we managed the peace after the Soviets retreated, the Taliban and the Afghan debacle never would have transpired.

No, the stupid part was in not following up on these temporary allies. We could also have embedded CIA agents with the jihadists, who we already knew were against both the West and the Communists.
Politics makes strange bedfellows, but that doesn't mean they should expect to be long-term mates.
