Great question! I would have a tough time choosing between Placido Polanco, Carlos Guillen, and Kenny Rogers.
If it doesn't have to be a player, everyone would universally say Jim Leyland, but that doesn't answer the question.
The Tigers were rolling through the AL until Polanco separated his shoulder on a catch against Boston in mid August. Because of the loss of Polanco for the majority of the remaining regular season, the Tigers finished the year with a 19-31 record over their last 50 games, which is the worst finish of any team to ever make the playoffs. Polanco batted .295 this year and nothing else spectacular about his stats other then he batted over 100 points higher with RISP (Runners In Scoring Position). Anytime a player is batting near .400 with RISP, he is truly clutch (I'm guessing A-Rod wasn't near .400 this season...just a guess)
Guillen this season batted .320 with 100 runs, 19 HR's, 85 RBI's, 20 steals, and a .400 OBP. While these numbers are not good enough to be considered for AL MVP, every once in a while, you would hear his name mentioned in the list, even though he didnt have the overall power numbers. Guillen's consistency, not only offensively, but defensively, I think gives him the edge.
However, Kenny Rogers was 17-8 with a 3.84 ERA, 99 K's, and only 62 BB's. But even more then his wins and low ERA, he helped lead a group of young pitchers and helped developed pitchers who were only thought of as average pitchers at best in Nate Robertson and Mike Maroth. While Rogers has normally struggled in the 2nd half of the season in years past, he was the rock that kept the team going as Bonderman and Verlander struggled down the stretch.
While all three of these guys (and many more) were great assets to the team, I would have to choose Guillen, but not by much.

The much deserving Placido Polanco was named ALCS MVP. This is all the info I can find.
"Polanco was the sparkplug that ignited Detroit's four-game sweep of Oakland, hitting .529 with a double and two RBIs while extending his postseason hitting streak to nine consecutive games. For his efforts, which included three consecutive multi-hit games, Polanco was named Most Valuable Player of the ALCS (MLB.com, 2006)."

My vote would go to Magglio Ordonez. Craig Monroe,
and Carlos Guillen would also merit consideration here
as well.
