I stayed at the Flying Pig Palace Hostel. They have two in Amsterdam (one downtown near the center and one across from Vondel Park). It was good. The staff was great. I arrived in Amsterdam a day early and they were completely booked, but they gave me a mattress to sleep on. The next day I got a room with full sized bunk beds (which is good if you need to share with a special someone) that had a brand new bathroom (which is rare in hostels in Europe)!. They had tons too chose from for breakfast (which is free. Toast, cereal, eggs, coffee, etc.

If you don't want to stay there, I suggest checking this website out.

Bug Europe:
www.bugeurope.com

Scroll all the way to the bottom where it says "Hostel Reviews" Click on the appropriate country and city and read the reviews of hostels. They revamped the website and the reviews are not listed so you have to click on the link where it says "Go to the old bug website for reviews". People have rated the hostels.

I am jealous and wish I was going back!

Have Fun!

Marnix Strasse (Street) has some great 3 to 4 star hotels. It runs like a ring around inner Amsterdam, a five minute walk and your smack in the middle of where you wanna be.
If you're gonna "backpack" it, try the Flying Pig hostel. Really clean and professional and cheaper than the hotels by about half.
As Amsterdam is really popular all year, you will need to book ahead
Google something like "Accomodation Amsterdam"
I only live 3 hours drive from there and go there a few times a year. You will meet some awesome people and see some real weirdos as well.

Have a great time

Hi I arrived at Schipol and chose a mid priced one, at the VVV ( at the airport) called Philosophe (philosophy) it was about £30 a night for a double, it was walking distance from everywhere, so no probs on distance. It was very clean and you would be comfortable there. Dont worry about turning up in any state, there was no time limit LOL but it was quiet, so I would say only if you are ok with a smoke, its not the place to come back puking! If you really want clean and good value, its great. Enjoy X
