Yes, with proper care they can live in the pot for years. They need a lot of light (bright room) or in a sunny window. The #1 thing people do wrong to them is over water them. Don't water until the top 1" of soil is dry.
Fert. once a month with Peters or MiracleGrow soluble fert. Make sure it stays free of bugs and disease. If either condition shows up treat the problem as soon as you notice.

I have mine planted in the ground and I don't have to do anything! They come back bigger and better!
