My son has passed an honours degree in Compter Science and Information Technology with a 2.1 grade. What does this mean? I have the utmost faith in him, and am sure this reflects his abilitiy and hard work, but want to know for myself what it means.

it is a very good grade! The higest is a first (1), then 2.1, then 2.2, then a 3, anything after that is a fail.

1 = 70-100%
2.1 = 60-69%
2.2 = 50-59%
3 = 40 - 49%

You should be proud of your son. The college which I go to almost refuses to give anyone a first unless they're a genius!

EDIT By the way, this is the Irish (possibly UK - not sure ) marking system. If you're in the states then ignore my answer

Generally a 2.0 is the cut off for most state universitys for a passing grade. This means that your son passed college by the skin of his teeth.

In a nutshell a 2.1 is not a very good GPA. I would like to say that I am telling you all this while assuming that he got a 2.1/4.0 scale. If the scale is based on less than a 4.0 his grade could actually be a little better.

Don't be upset with him though. Even though he barely passed school less than one out of every 4 men actually get a bachelors degree. He has entered the top 25% of the job market!
