I'm confused as to whether or not I should order one of the 'name change packages' that say they provide forms to fill out to change my last name on all legal documents. Some other sources say that my name will automatically change once my marriage license is sent in. Which is right?

I never used a package to change my names on legal documents - I did have to have an original copy of the marriage certificate for social security, license, and the banks, etc.... Just check with the places where you need to change your name and find out what they need

Nothing is done automatically since not all women change their names. No don't waste money to order some silly (probably scam) package. Take a day off, go to social security with you marriage license, then go by drivers license place. The bank should be your last stop. After that just about anything else can be done by mail or phone.

No, your name does NOT change "automatically"; you still have to take steps to change your name on your official documents, as well as your credit cards and bank accounts. Find out what the rules and procedures are in your state. The same place you got your marriage license from could probably advise you.

You have to change it yourself. Go to the nearest social security office and you'll have to fill out some paperwork. It wont cost a thing. If you don't have an office near you, go on the Internet look up the social security web site, fill out the paperwork and send it in. Once you've done that go to the DMV and get your drivers license changed. You will have to bring your marriage certificate. After that, go to your bank and call credit card companies to give them you new name.

It does not automatiaclly change. You need to get a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Thake that, along with your current state issued id, your citizenship papers (if necessary) birth certificate, and social security card to the ss office in your area. They will change the name on your social security card and issue a new one to you. Then 24-48 hours later you can go to the dmv, with your id and your marriage certificate. Once its update in social security, you can change your drivers license. While you're there you may want to update your registration. THen you can call all the credit companies and let them know of your name change.

Take your marriage license with you and visit the bank, the department of motor vehicles and the social security administration....once your name is changed there....you are good to go....you can change it in all other places by showing your drivers license.

It depends on what state you live in, but for Social Security you have to send in documentation including the original copy of your marriage license, but you need to contact your local administration for the state you live in.

All you need to do is go to SS office and change your name. You dont need to get married to do that. You have to go to the DMV to change name and retake your photo for license. All bank accounts and cc's you have to close if you want to change your name and reopen with new name. Congrats!

If you take your husband's last name legally then you will have to do that. You can choose NOT to take his name.
