[F]or your house - kitchen and one in the garage, but putting it in the master bedroom is very good too. The kitchen ones are different type of FE though as you are dealing with grease fires.

In the kitchen. Just as a note - fire extinguishers only work for about 6 years and then need to be recharged. It is a good idea every six months to turn your fire extinguisher upside down. Fire extinguishers are filled with powder and over time, the powder hardens and becomes like a rock. The fire extinguisher will not work if the powder hardens and unfortunately, people realize this far too late. When you flip it upside down, you should feel the powder shifting - if not, call a fire protection company and they will inspect it for you.

Near where you might have a fire, such as an oven or stovetop.

Also one in basement, if you have one, or wherever your furnace and dryer are located. You dont want to have to run upstairs for an extinguisher or downstairs to get one for the kitchen. Home Depot sells a nice one for $19.95, I'd buy at least 3 and not hide them......let everyone at home know where you have them so they can either use them or bring them to you.

Also, read the instructions on where they can be used. Some extinguishers arent safe on electrical fires.

Most fires occur in the kitchen; therefore, somewhere near the kitchen. However, be sure not to place it immediately next to the place where a fire may occur (eg. stove, etc.) or you won't be able to access it through the fire.

We have one for our kitchen (stove, etc.), laundry room (HVAC units, dryer, etc.) and under our bed. Sounds like a lot, but the total cost for all three is less than $50. Small price for peace of mind with little ones in the house.

Near the door.
That way, you grab the extinguisher, look back at the fire, try put it out, and you're enar an escape route

near the sink -- not close to things that could potentially catch on fire -- makes the extinguisher hard to get at.

Up president Bush's @ss! Oops sorry you meant in your house. I'm not really sure. It'd be pretty ugly in the living room. Maybe a small one in the kitchen somewhere and one in the garage or near a door. Maybe look online for info on that. Technically one on each floor would be safest but who does that? I don't even have one myself. Just detectors. Maybe I should get one.
