eekoring and Thomas are 110% correct.

I lived through it, spent time in San Francisco, hung around with people in the movement but was never really a part of it. I showered, shaved, did laundry, and wore shoes not Jesus sandals. The people you speak of lived on the streets and in the parks. They didn't shower for weeks on end and saw fit to deposit bodily waste in any convenient place. Sometimes it was business restrooms and sometimes flower gardens. From my observations these people were unlike anything you are describing. They were essentially cowards who were scared of the draft more than of Communism, totalitarianism, the KGB, hunger, or anything else that America was trying to defeat. A whole subculture who would have gladly lived on their knees before even considering standing and fighting. And they did this all under the umbrella of free speech, something unknown to those they would have gladly supported.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone but I find it hard to believe that any 18 to 20 year old could have 1% of the knowledge of world affairs and diplomacy that this bunch smelly unwashed scruffs were credited with. Let alone be privy to the information needed to make the decisions on those matters.

Why people are called Hippies because, as a person who smokes weed it don't do as these polititions say it does. it relaxes the boddy. So Hippies we'r known for being lazy and having the munnchies all the time. but yes most Hippies need to atleast shave some times. Hippie is not a word of bad meaning it just really means you observe more than most people do. so there you know my answer about your question. have a nice day :)

Ummmm but those people were smelly unwashed scruffs...

Look, I use to call myself a hippie and I wore flowers in my hair and went to anti Gulf war protests and helped feed the homeless with my dad BUT a dirty young person is jeans, flip flops/barefoot, and a mellow attitude is a "dirty a.ss hippie . Hippie is no longer associated with a cause, it is now a look or a pot smokers attitude...

ACTUALLY, I think of stoned... bellbottom-wearing... John Lennon glasses-wearing... Cheech & Chong-sounding people that actually made more sense than LBJ and Nixon put together about war and everything that went on in the US during that war. (Aside from the whole spitting on soldiers returning from Vietnam... that never made sense to me... if those soldiers had the choice in the matter they would've stood up to both Presidents also, just like I stood up to my unit... division and government by protesting this current joke of a war in Iraq... I still had to go though, as soldiers unfortunately it is part of our duty to go where our government tells us though I stood up to it before it started... when it started... through the whole deployment... and still do now even after I'm out of the military.)

i agree with their views, i think we should have peace and we should try to keep the environment in good condition without polluting it. However, hippies have this stereotype because of how they look, they want to save energy and water and so they dont wash. I dont actually know any and so i dont know if this is the case or not, but this is why they are known to be this way.

Maybe because hippies are smelly unwashed scruffs. The description has nothing to do with their religious and political beliefs, just their appearance and body odors.

It must be from that woodstock festival. Lots of mud and rain for a few days, and no finger-bowls,saunas or boots the chemist available.

Hippies are being glorified, but in reality they were dirty, smoked pot, did drugs and had sex with everything that moved. They were lazy , had no jobs and preached free love etc. Don't let people misguide you into thinking they were anything special, they were not.
