By going on the Maury show to tell their partners a "secret?"

Not only is it degrading to themselves, its totally disrespectful of their partner! I mean, most secrets are that they cheated, the baby isnt yours, etc. And that is a private matter...I would never air my "dirty laundry" like that! Despite the fact, I'll venture a few guesses:

1 - They want attention...even negative attention...its small-scale "fame" to be on tv.

2 - They're scared of what their partner might do to them if they told them in private...this way they have lots of witnesses.

3 - They're worried their partner just might walk out and leave if they told them in person. On the Maury show guests are encouraged to talk about things longer than they might in real life.

4 - Maury seems like a pretty good guy, and seems to want to help people. Maybe some guests see him, in a way, as a counselor or psychologist, someone who is willing to work with them and their problems.

5 - Their making it up. I dont know, I think most of the Maury guests are real, but as for the Jerry Springer show (which you could ask the same question about) many seem fake.

I'm sure there are even more reasons, but these are a few that seem "logical" to me. Good question though.

While many of them are real, there are certain cases where the "guests" are actually actors, and the whole show is basically a fiction.
I used to know a kid who was regularly hired to "fill out" small families on FAMILY FEUD, along with other actors who've done the same.

It's there 15 min of fame, also i wonder do they get paid to go on that show, it seems to me that they are not your normal run of the mill type. Also Connie Chung insisted that her hubby stopped doing the show Hard Copy because it was too sleazy, go figure.
