2 major underlying reasons for slavery:
1/ Ideology - the prevailing attitude of the day was that some racial groups are inferior to others and therefore, they require "taking care of".....this perceived inequality de-humanised black people leading to the capture and enslavement of millions of Africans.
2/ Commerce - gread for more money, finer things etc...the biggest motivating factor there is behind most heinous crimes perpetrated by entities, governments and individuals....the industrial revolution in most colonies where agriculture was the primary economic venture could only be sustained by a steady stream of "cheap" (in parenthese because slave labor is actually free labor) labor.....
You will find these 2 reasons in every region where slavery was practiced...Brazil, The Carribean, the Americas etc.
