I do believe that really depends on the book.
If the book is "Pride And Prejudice" or "Catch 22", it should be taken off the shelf, read, and savoured.
If the book is "You Too Can De-Scent A Polecat" or "1001 Tofu Recipes", then the shelf is where it belongs. Preferably someone *else's* shelf.
