I want to connect via Remote Desktop to my primary PC here at home. I have a Linksys Wireless-G router in which my primary PC and my laptop are both wireless computers when it comes to the internet. If I'm on my laptop and I'm at HOME, and try to connect to the primary PC, it lets me, as I'm in the same network. However, if I'm OUTSIDE the Road Runner (home) network, it says that the laptop cannot find the specified IP address. (basically it won't connect). I tried even doing "port forwarding" via Linksys' given directions, and it still does not seem to work. I have heard of these other "stand-alone" programs like "PC Anywhere" and the like - do these work better than trying to configure your PC to use Windows "REmote Desktop" - AND how can I get RD to work correctly?

What port are you port forwarding? RDP uses port 3389. Make sure that port is being forwarded to the internal IP address of your PC.

You then will need to know the external IP address of your Linksys router at the time you wish to connect. If your IP changes frequently, you'll need to sign up for a dynamic DNS account at DynDNS.org or some other dynamic DNS provider. Then set up dynamic DNS on your router if it supports it or install the dynamic DNS client on your main PC to keep it up-to-date.

Once that's all set up, open the RDP client and type in the FQDN of your dynamic DNS host and you should get right in. Keep in mind that if you're connecting from a business or school network, they may be blocking port 3389 outbound. If that's the case, you'll need to speak with the firewall admin to see if you can get that changed.

It's possible road runner is blocking the port 3389, also what ip address are you connecting to? The ip address of the computer or the ip address of your linksys? You need to connect to the ip address of the linksys not the ip address of the computer. Make sure that you have port 3389 forwarded to the ip address of your computer that you are trying to connect to and you should be good to go. That is unless road runner is blocking that port, I have run into isps that have done that and the only way around it is to get a commercial account.
