Everybody has their favorite. I'd recommend going to
http://reviews.cnet.com/Notebooks/2001-3121_7-0.html?tag=img.lt and then http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1874,9,00.asp or even http://www.notebookreview.com/. All are EXCELLENT sites. You can read reviews of laptops in the price range you're in, with the features you want. They'll let you search by brand, price, features, weight, popularity, size, etc. You'll find that certain brands always end up near the top. Then keep notes or printouts of the ones that seem to fit you, and then go shopping. I'd hate for you to buy one because "someone on the Internet told me to!" and then get stuck with something you don't like.
Only suggestion I would make is to get a screen size of 15" or bigger. Also, be aware that Miscrosoft's new OS comes out in like 2 months, and prices will start to drop fast. You may want to wait and get a brand new, NEW laptop so you don't have to pay for an upgrade later (but XP will be fine for 2-3 more years)
Do your research, educate yourself, and you'll get a great laptop.

Hey there,
I would suggest a laptop from Dell. They have good prices and their laptops a also reliable with good warranties if something does go wrong. You can also customize your personalized laptop on their site. Have a look at them if you haven't already at:
http://www.dell.com
Hope this helps.

Buy a used Mac iBook or Powerbook, there's plenty of places online that sell refurbished models and are guaranteed.
Once you've used a Mac you won't go back to Windows.

Mine. I got it for free through a scholarship program. Inexpensive, but reliable.

Toshiba, Toshiba, Toshiba. It is the choice of those who look for rugged dependability. Don't try anything else.
