You need to have a lot more than a love for animals. You need to be smart, you need to have a love for medicine and you need excellent people skills.

You also need to be pretty tough...getting into vet school is hard, but in the greater scheme of things, that's the easy part! The hours, even while you're still at vet school, are terrible. You get the 'joys' of dealing with stupid people on a daily basis (the flipside of that is that you also meet some absolutely wonderful people), you need to be able to deal with animal suffering, and things like euthanasia are part and parcel of daily practice. Vets apparently have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession.

That said, I'm training as a vet and I love it. I'd never want to do anything else. If it's the right job for you, then it's a brilliant thing to do. Please email me if I can be of any help to you.

I wouldn't exactly describe being a vet as "fun"but it certainly could be very rewarding. Although you must be an animal lover you almost must deal with death daily. You will see sick, abused and uncared for animals. You will also see a perfectly good animal put down because the owner can't afford the treatment. You will also see animals so sick they don't have a chance of surviving.
Although I love animals I couldn't stand to have my heart broken nearly everyday. On the other hand, thank goodness for the wonderful people that do become vets. I admire them deeply.
Good luck in your decision.

I've known a lot of vets. They all enjoy their jobs, and it's a good way to make a living. But it has its low points. Euthenasias are going to be part of your day, and they're very, very hard to do. Vets have much higher rates of depression and suicide than other professions. I strongly recommend working as an assistant in an office before making your decision about vet school (which is quite selective these days, by the way).

It can be fun. It can be very sad. It can be rewarding. But it is very hard work. Ask your local vets if you can come in to "shadow" someday so you can get a look at what goes on behind the doors.

i imagine if you like animals is fun.. i wanted to be one too when i grew up.. but then i got to think about all the bad things about being one..
ie seeing all the cruelty that happens..
having to put animals down when there is no reason for it..

there are so many pluses and negatives to being a vet.. :)

it just depends on what you want to do :)
