Wow! What an assortment of answers you got to this question!
I was raised by parents that looked for homeopathic and natural remedies before having to take us to the doctors. My father used to treat our ear infections with a capsule of garlic oil (oh believe me it tastes really nasty), which he would puncture and squeeze the oil into our ears. The reason garlic is such a good cure for ear problems is that it is a natural antibiotic that is not likely to unbalance your body's own healing. We would lay on our "good" side with the hurting/infected ear upward and he would put the oil into our ear. We had to sleep with a towel on the pillow in case we turned over, but preferably slept with the infected ear upward--the oil drips down your throat and that's why I say it tastes so bad. But, from experience overnight the offending ear was better in the morning, usually it only took one application. Just be sure not to let the oil drip out onto your bedding as it is hard to remove. An alternate treatment would be: using a drop of pure Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca Alternifolia oil) mixed with 15 to 20 drops of warm olive oil (olive oil is a natural antibacterial), Insert the oil mixture directly into the outside ear canal with a dropper 3-4 times daily. Avoid using full strength Tea Tree Oil in ears as a local irritation can result. A hot water bottle or heating pad turned on low should be put over the ear. Keep hydrated by drinking LOTS of water to help flush infection from the rest of your system.
Note: The American Lung Association cites formaldehyde as a possible major cause of chronic ear infection in children. Formaldehyde is an ingredient in many cleaning and personal care products commonly found in the home. P.S. Some of the leading baby washes and shampoos contain an ingredient called Quanternium-15, which if you Google it, is FORMALDEHYDE!
I don't know about you, but I certainly don't want to use preservatives on my kids or grandkids. (Formaldehyde preserves things--remember the biology lab? And is also used in funeral homes as an embalming fluid--SCARY!)

Use lemon juice in your ear for an ear infection
Hydrogen peroxide works for me. Drop a few drops in the ear and lean over to let it sink in ( it feels really cool too). It actually feels like it is working. I do this a few times a day and it gets rid of it quickly!
For ear infections, especially swimmers ear, you can clear it up by putting a few drops of rubbing alcohol into your ear and draining it immediately a few times a day. It's better to do this to both ears after a swim to prevent the ear infection completely. I've had two terrible ear infections and I use alcohol every time I swim now. Do this at the first hint of ache or itchiness in your ear

I find that many oils can work with ear infections so start with one that is mild and less expensive. Virgin olive oil usually works for me. People who take antibiotics for ear infections sometimes find that the infections reoccur and even become antibiotic resistant over time. Antibiotics also kill the Flora (good bacteria) in you body and then yeast flourishes causing more infections.

If you are allergic to all antibiotics which I find hard to believe you should be discussing this with your doctor for your best alternative. There are a lot of old wives tales but it is truly unwise to put anything into an infected ear and cotton is included on that list. You should never put cotton into an infected ear period. You should understand that an ear infection can lead to a ruptured ear drum or hearing impairment. I personally think you are just trying to "avoid" antibiotics but hey it's your hearing you're jeopardizing not mine.
