The vehicle is registered to me but my cousin was paying off the loan, he could no longer pay the loan so he let someone else take over the payments without my knowledge. How would I go about recovering the vehicle if all I have is the VIN # but not the license plate # or any extra set of keys.

Why would you let someone else register a vehicle in your name in the first place? Anything that goes wrong is now your fault, since you own the car. If it's towed, you owe the bill, etc.

Your beef seems to be with your cousin, but then again would you rather he just quit making payments and stick you with that too?

At any rate, go to the police with the VIN, they will be able to gather up the rest of the information on their computers, and explain the situation. Since it's officially your car, you can report it as 'unauthorized use' if not as 'stolen' and perhaps recover it that way. Do you want the car?

I hope you've learned your lesson on this one and will be more responsible in the future. Hey--could I have your cousin's name. I have a business deal I'd like to include them in. LOL. Seriously, I think the previous answer posted is the best advice. Obtain a duplicate title and get the police to escort you. There is a 'snatch and grab' law in TN that enables you to repossess by self-help. You'll be lucky if it's not wrecked already--without insurance--which means the state will pull your license. Maybe your cousin can give you rides in that event--since you were so generous to risk your own credit record, financial interest, driver's privileges, etc. And...you can probably get keys from the dealership w/the VIn. Expect to pay plenty for an extra key if it has a chip in it. Good luck to you and don't try this again.

very simple and legal. go down to DMV and request a duplicate copy of vehicle registration. get an escort from the police with your driver license and vehicle registration paper with you. police will take the car back to you.
