Ok, possibly it's an obvious question, but I don't care. I don't get it: Looking at South Korea, and it's covered with lights. North Korea is virtually all black. Wouldn't there be lights for industry, factories, small towns, cities, etc, in North Korea?

Kim Jong IL runs the country in the ground. The people are indoctrinated with Kim's propaganda. The only people who really know whats going on outside DPRK are either paupers who are put in concentration camps or high-ranking military who get posh gifts from Kim to stay on track. If they disobey, they know what happens.

So there is no industry beyond the basics. Most of the power they have is supplied by China. They turn off all the lights at night to conserve.

Because they do not have enough energy to produce plutonium and at the same time light all the houses in the country.

There is no electricity at night in North Korea, except for a few areas of the capital.

Power in N.Korea is distributed only in the capital, the rest of the country is not developed. North Korea became stagnant in the 50's and has not developed since. No lights/electricity, no visible light from space.

They don't have the capability to provide electricity to the entire country like most countries in the civilized world. The country is so poor, and mis-uses it's money so badly that they need China and the U.N. to feed their own people because they don't have enough food production industries in the country. They are too busy making an a-bomb and building a huge army.

Electricity consumption in North Korea is approximately one tenth that of the South (29.9 TWh vs. 293.6 TWh), hence fewer lights at night. See the following site for more comparative information on the two countries.

They still live like what their ancestors did in the ancient days
which is using candles and torched fires. As well as NOT having
necessary resources to produce electrical power.

They don't have the power distribution like other countries. They worry about defence and war instead of helping their own people.

Hi. Good site! They are possibly conserving power, possible making a night attack more difficult, possible do not have a great infrastructure for power distribution.
