Use Google Search. Try the syntax of a phrase or a lyric you know part of, then a + sign, then the word lyrics.
i.e. down by the schoolyard+lyrics or
find the queen of all my dreams+lyrics

This will turn up a search page with links to any pages that have those words as part of the lyrics to a song. In this case, it would probably turn up links to Paul simon because those are partial lyrics to his song "Me & Julio Down By The School Yard". The second search would turn up Led Zeppelin's tune "Ramble On".

If the same song was done by a number of different artists, you'd get links to each of those artists.

If you want to know which CD or Album a particular song is on and you know the artist, then search:

i.e.: Metallica+discography or Janet Jackson+discography

This will normally return results for webpages about the artist and all the tunes they have out. Another source is to go to wikipedia.com and then search the term you want

Lyrics.com is the best source. Musicians' songs are categorized by last name, title of album, and title of song.

Another easy thing to do to surpass the middle man is to use ask.com, which is my favorite search engine, and put your search in quotation marks...

For instance, if I wanted to search for the artist Sting, and the song 'Brand New Day,' I'd type in the search box, "sting brand new day lyrics." You'll get lots of accurate hits that way.

Hope this helps. It always works for me ;)

www.lyrics.com

Or go to any search engine, type the part of the song you know in quotations, and hit search. If you know the artist search for "artist's name & lyrics".
