I'm studying in Maastricht, Netherlands and wanted to take a day trip to either Antwerp, Belgium or Cologne, Germany. I'll probably be in the city 11am - 7pm. I wanted to know which would be better for a day trip? And what should I do in that city? I would like to go in 2 days, so fast answers would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tough call. Both cities are equally less than super amazing destinations. Cologne is closer and more direct to get to, Antwerp is marginally more interesting but full of Belgians. Cologne has sausages, Antwerp has better beer and waffles. I vote Cologne.

I've lived been some time in Köln (Cologne) and know Antwerp also rather well. If you like Roman history, I should say Köln. If you like shipbuilding museum, diamonds, old painting (Rubens, ...), museum of Plantin (old house with one of the oldest printing museums of the world in it, ... I should say Antwerp. Antwerp has more old buildings, musea, cathedral, beautiful churches.
Koln has also the old market but in general Antwerp has more authenticity (because Köln has been flattened by the allied bombers in WWII.
Besides the beer and food is much better in Antwerp.
Give it a try, you wont regret it.

heyyy I was also studying in Maastricht and visited both places, both cities are great and beautiful, but if this is going to be a one day trip try Cologne, since Antwerp is far away from maastricht.. what to see, the cathedral, walk around the river...

I have lived, worked and loved in Antwerp.. I could tell you a thousand reasons to make you believe that it is the best destination.. but if you have only to spend that couple of hours, go for Cologne.. you will enjoy it briefly, like a brief snuff of the worldfamous , well smelling 'Eau De Cologne 4711'... young and already soo hastened... Enjoy, wherever you go

Definitely Antwerp.....I have been to Cologne, the Cathedral is worth seeing, otherwise it's just a big city.
