OK, i just potsed this befor but nobody read the title rigth and told me how to tune a 12 string.

The question was, somebody told me that you could turn a 6 string guitar a certain way so it sounds like your playing a 12 string guitar.

IS THIS TRUE AND DOES ANYBODY WANT TO TELL ME HOW TO DO IT ?

no can do mate-although i really wish i could!!the best thing to do really is get a capo on and play the song a little higher to make it sound a little sweeter-a good piece of advice came from another answer-if you are recording-doubletrack it and play the chords in different places to get that fuller sound,my acoustic pedals and electric pedals have presets for a 12 string sound but ive found you get a better one by messing with the presets and finding your own setting that suits you.there are certian tunings that you can do to alter the guitar or make it sound a certain way-google the keith richards tuning method if you want to sound like the walking riff himself,or alternative tunings are to be found by the same method.
i generally find that the original way is best and doubletrack it-only probs there are that you gotta really plat in sync to get that distintive 12 string sound and not a mess!!
i wouldnt recommend a 12 string to you unless you got big bucks to spend on a top model-they are notorious for going out and sound bloody awful when they do-much worse than a six string-if you want to get one that wont do that id have around 450 quid handy for a reasonable new one-or 300 for a decent second hand one-personally though id stick to multi-tracking-or better still find a buddy to play with and get the sound between you!
good luck and keep it up!

you can't

12 strings are tuned to either the same pitch or to octaves of a 6 string. The tuning is the same but you just get a richer sound

I think that you really cant do it, it will always be like 6 strings, if you have only 6 strings.... And why would you want to make them sound like that?

Shouldn't think so for a minute - you just can't get the same depth of sound from half the number of strings

Not possible, try a processor and acoustic amplifier, or better still, buy a 12 string ax.

Don't think you can do it just with tuning. If you're playing an electroacoustic you could try an effects pedal. If you're in the studio, then double track.

No can do, but you can buy effects processors that will do a reasonable job for you.
