I think it is poor real-life education, both from the parents and schools. Education and parent's expectations for children have been dumbed down so that school itself doesn't have to be work, and a kid doesn't have to start saving when they are 14 if they want a car when they 16.
I think that failing to teach children the value of a dollar is more to blame than the saftey nets that are out there for people who fail. With a few exceptions, people don't want to get on welfare, but if they are used to being given everything, they don't realize that there is a certain amount of hard work that goes into being an adult, and even more that goes into being a successful adult.

NO! Parenting is. People need to wake up and quite having children just for the sake of having children. If you do not have a genuine interest in raising a mentally, physically & socially functional human being, you should not be bring children into this world.

I believe welfare and other socialized programs are the blame for the creation of the new modern breed of slaves being created at the delight of the democrats. People are no longer responsible for anything and this will allow the socialist to take over much sooner with less conflict.

Hey Westley; the man is looking for you in Florida! There are many contributing factors Poverty & the lack of job oppurtunities! Family & friends of their enviroments etc. Poverty is so destuctive & not ever properly addressed! Also the greed of those who have the resources "congress" ignoring the HUGE problem in USA! I don't know who is getting this wonderfull life with welfare but i know that if i don't find a progressive paying job soon all my life saving will be gone!

They most certainly are here in UK. But what to do about the poverty? We cannot simply allow people to starve, as was the case in the 19th century. What needs to be done is to encourage businesses to open up in poorer areas, even if this means offering such businesses big tax breaks. I mean the expansion of business and not moving it from A to B.

I think its parenting and materialism. The average american kid gets around 80 toys a year. No wonder their depending on social programs later. No entry level job can give them the money they think they "need" to survive.

To a certain point, but I strongly blame the system emplaced to protect them, originally.
Children are too empowered, and can virtually get away with anything with minimal consequences as a result

I think materialism is to blame. Kids today are more interested in "getting things" than they are in working for them.

I would have to say yes. Knowing that someone will take care of you if you don't pull your weight doesn't encourage initiative by any means.
