Funnily enough I was asked this question just a little while ago - I am pleased to see we reached the right conclusion by looking at the grain and cut of the material.

"One common question about cummerbunds is: do the pleats face up or down? The answer: the pleats face UP, as if they were little pockets. If you make crumbs while you eat, the cummerbund pleats should be able to catch your slovenly mess. One last note: you can wear a vest or a cummerbund, but not both. That would be gauche (that's bad)."

Having once been employed in a store that rented tuxedos and the accessories, I can say to be correct the pleats should be up. Historically a cummerbund was a sash, which was worn around the waist, and pleated so that the pleats could be used as pockets.

pleats up.

The pleats on the cummerbund are a hold over from british colonial days, and the pleats were always worn up to hold tickets, coat stubs etc.

I used to have to wear one as a uniform to work and I was told the purpose of it is to catch crumbs and since they're not going to get in their with the pleats down I guess it's up...however, I think it looks nicer down.

Hi > goodly Q Wully.
It is pleats downwards.
Bloomin' things. Yet good fun.
That way, the spilt hot soup does not travel up into nether regions.
I wear a bow-tye upside down on purpose to go with it, but that is just me.
Bob.

Its up... to catch the crumbs I know the crumbs would be better on your trouers or on the floor and you wouldnt have to pick them out of your cummerbund later but have fun and a good night
