The wall, in between our living room and bedroom, has crack from the ceiling down the wall on our bedroom side. The wall is also bowed out about 1-1 1/2 foot. There is also a crack above the door, on the ceiling. My husband got up in the attic to check for water, but didn't find any. What do you think it could be?

I think that it is more than just settling. I know settling can make little cracks sometimes, but I am talking major bowing going on. With a major ceiling crack. I believe the wall crack is probably caused by the bowing. (or at least it made it bigger). If my husband was in the attic, wouldn't he have seen termites?

If this wall runs thru the center of your
house it most likely is a load bearing wall.
This wall carries the weight of the roof and/or
second floor and transfers the weight to the
foundation. If this wall has bowed out 1.5 feet,
you should be able to see a sag in the roof.
This is major repair and should be fixed now!
Call a pro.

Hopefully, u made the sale contingency of the sale of the property with it. It would depend on the area ur in, as to weather it can be fixed. The bow could mean that water is getting behind the wall and bowing it out, or has in the past and that's what its done over time. You can call a contractor to see how much it would cost to fix and ask the seller to assist or do it b4 u move in? Walk away from the house, is another option. Or lowering the price by how much it would cost to fix the problem. You have a choice, and a voice use them. Don't get suckered into purchasing something that will end up being a money pit.

CAT WOMAN IS RIGHT IF BOWING 1.5' (FEET) - RUN, RUN NOW!
HE WOULD NOT HAVE SEEN TERMITES, IF NEW HOUSE CALL BUILDER.... IF 1.5" ( INCHES ) YOU COULD JUST HAVE TWO STUDS BOWING THE SAME WAY NEXT TO EACH OTHER!

CUT AN ACCESS HOLE TO SEE WHERE WIRE IS, & CUT 1 OR MORE CUTS INTO THE STUD AT THE STEEPEST ANGLE OF YOUR CIRCULAR SAW, ON THE PREGNANT SIDE OF THE BOW. RUN A 3" DRYWALL SCREW INTO CUT 2" BELOW CUT ( WILL SUCH UP BOW ) - REPEAT! DON'T HIT THE WIRE OR PIPES, YOU WERE GOING TO HAVE TO PATCH S/R ANY WAY, ACESS HOLE IS INSURANCE!

Sounds like termites have weeked the wall. If it is concrete it means it has cracked.
