I did this some years ago during my summer holidays.
I'm not suggesting in any way that this is the correct way to do it...
but, climbed up the tree & limbed the top. Tied a rope around the section we were going to take off. I then started sawing through the trunk and at the moment it was about to come away, my mate on the ground yanked on the rope to pull it clear while I hung onto the rest of the trunk for dear life.
Like I say... probably not the best way to do it, best ask a tree surgeon.

Why? For Christmas trees? If they are growing into power lines or creating some kind of nuisance, just climb up to the top with a rope, tie the rope onto the trunk above the cut, then cut it with a chain saw. In the case of a power line, I would just call the power company and let them deal with it.

It depends on how high they are now and how high you want them.If they are young trees just cut the growing point off when they have reached the hieght you want.If they are taller can you put a ladder against them safely and use a lopper or a pruning saw? If so? make a cut above the height you want and get that part of tree cut off and safely out of the way. Then trim to the height you want.
If you dont think you can do it safely call the proffesionals in.

Just watch out for any power lines. The neighbours once knocked out the street and bought the cables down (luckily the broken side of the cable was dead)
