Most experienced ultrasound techs can tell the sex at 17 weeks. It's possible he just didn't know or couldn't get a good look.

Actually -- I spoke with many friends as well as my doctor. I am receiving my ultrasound next week and I will be 18 weeks. She stated that they usually schedule the first between 18 and 20 weeks so that it the parents to be would like to know the sex, they have a better chance finding out. It really all depends how the baby is laying. Sometimes the baby is positioned so that you cannot tell. Also-- drink lots and lots of water prior-- so that the scan is a lot clearer. This should help-- from what I am told. GOOD LUCK!!

My daughter has been told that the baby cannot be sexed until her 20 week scan at least. A friend of mine didnt find out the sex until her 34 week scan - depends on what position your baby is in when the scan is done.

The sex of the baby can never be 100% accurate according to scans so early in pregnancy.
In my Primary Healthcare Trust area, scans are normally done at 12 and 20 weeks. At the 20 week scan, you can request to know the sex of your baby, however, they do advise that it's only accurate to around 70% and is never a given.
We're expecting our 1st child in January and chose not to ask what the sex may be as thought it'd be a better suprise.

Many hospitals have a policy of not telling you - perhaps they are worried about the consequences of getting it wrong in the current blame culture. I was told by the paediatrician I work with that it is hard early on (i.e. at 12 weeks) as all foetuses have their genitals on the outside(!) but later on, depending on the position, it should be possible. I was offered to know the sex of my (son) at 12 weeks by the specialist doing my scan, but I said no thank you as I wanted a surprise.

You may be able to tell even earlier in some cases. It depends on position, size, the expertise of the specialist doing the scan, etc. It is a false statement to say it cannot happen.
The baby's genitals visually develop around 10 wks (I believe. I cannot find my source right now) Once they produce (or in a girl case, don't produce) you can start to see anytime after that.

It depends...if it's a girl, it might be a little harder to tell. Also, if the baby is in an awkward position or crossing their legs or something that could also be a reason you couldn't tell. I had an ultrasound at 17 weeks and 6 days, and they could definitely see the boy parts, haha! So it is possible!

I have 3 kids and am pregnant with my 4th. My doctor said that you can best determine the baby's sex through an ultrasound after 20 weeks. Anything prior to that may give you false information because the genitalia starts off looking the same for both boys and girls, and depending on how far along you actually are, may be the deciding factor of just how developed your baby is.
Good luck and congrats on the baby!!

Yes, you can find out the sex at your 20 week scan.
When i went for mine the baby was lying with its legs crossed so we had to wait till the birth to find out!
We had a beautiful baby boy by the way.

You should be able to in the next week and a half. I have a friend that found out at 18 wks. Though I found out right at 20 wks. Your Dr may be just trying to wait. That way he/she is able to get a clearer/ more accurate view of the baby.
