They voted Democratic for a century out of resentment over losing the Civil War. But they switched to the Republicans ouit of anger over being forced to treat Black Americans equally under the law. That's where we stand today. The GOP has further cultivated their support by mixing religion and politics. They're suckers for that.

The South is hardly Third World. And save the name-calling.
By the way I'm neither a Southerner nor a Republican.
The Republican appeal in the South is largely cultural. The Democrats who had in previous generations defended racial segregation changed course and came to be regarded as the "black" party. This opened the door to the GOP, which had always been hated in the Old South as the party of Lincoln, who led the country in defeating the CSA in the Civil War and eventually freed the slaves.
Starting in the 1960s, the Republicans used that opportunity to appeal to Southern religious sensibilities, traditional (some would say backward) cultural beliefs, and suspicion of the social and cultural changes that characterize the latter half of the 20th Century.
You are right in as much as there are a lot of working class Southerners whose economic interests aren't being served by a party that is so closely allied with corporate interests, but who still vote Republican. There is a phrase pundits use--"God, gays, guns and guts"--many voters vote Republican because the GOP is essentially the designated Christian party, because it's unfriendly to homosexuality (and cultural modernity in general) because they oppose gun control, and because the Republicans are more shameless about wrapping themselves in the flag--witness the GOP attacks on the patriotism of decorated war veterans who dare to criticize the Prez -- John Kerry, JohnMurtha, Max Cleland, etc.
A lot of people respond to these appeals to traditional sensibilities, and a lot of those folks are in the South.

Now, I know plenty of fine folks (friends and family) still living in the South, so that's not a fair assessment. The South is traditionally bible-belt country and that equals Republican. Often, that goes for Causasion, African American, Asian & Hispanic voters equally. Smaller towns & communities also tend to be conservative and vote Repub. It's the big cities on the coasts that are often Dem country. That being said, you will find Rep & Dem pockets all across the country.

Northerns, Southerns, East Coast, West Coast and everything in between,
November is right around the corner. Whether you're a Dem, Repub or Independant, get out and vote!

The southern people are like Australians, everyone knows that they are there, but nobody cares. I think that they need a good awakening and should throw the whole government into a tizzy by a unanimous vote one way or another and screw all the jerks out of a cushy job at the desk and give them a trailer to live in for their retirement. I think this would awaken more than the southern people who in my books are very nice and friendly as well as too trusting and loyal to those who fill their heads with all this bull**** to get votes at their expense. But one day the "South Will Rise Again", and I am not an American either, but I see it.

The South used to be predominantly Democrat. This was because after the Civil War, the Northern Repubicans came down and took their land and riches and forced them to become the poorest region....

But Republicans weren't happy with taking their riches, they also wanted the Southerners to support them in politics so they paid attention, and noticed that Religion is really big in the South...

So all they had to do was to paint Democrats as being anti-religion and they were able to recapture the Southern vote....

Arkansas.. stigmatically one of the most "backwards" states.. lets take a look at them... they are the birthplace and home of Wall-Mart, Ranger Boats, Acme Brick, Riceland (the largest producer of rice in the world) JB Hunt, Tysons Chicken, Alltell... and the list goes on... though lacking for the past couple of decades, they are in the top 5 in the nation for growth of their educational institutions and are predominantly democrat. I could list many such things for each southern state. So your theory about the south is incorrect. democrats hold over 70% of the house in Arkansas and most of the senate as well. the Republican Governor is termed out and the Democratic candidate is up by about 15% in the polls.. granted, if another tornado came threw you'd probably only see some trailer park person on the news, but that's because that's what sells, not what we are made of. Come this November it looks like the South, in general, will be predominantly blue.

(P.S. Texas does not count as a southern state)

The civil rights movement of the 1960s drove them all away from the Democratic party. The south had remained steadfastly against the party of Abraham Lincoln until forced desegregation by the Democrats in the 60s.

Well Mr. highly rich and intelligent northerner, can you prove any of the absurd statement that you just brayed? These backwood redneck yahoos are going to vote for whom they please and the tone of your question is one reason they will vote that way. The last time I checked, there are literally ghost towns,in the north and northeast,of closed down factories. Did all the yankees that worked in them go overseas, or are they doing service type jobs which makes them poor?

Hey Bozo I moved from up north to the south because of high taxes up north and better opportunities in the south and there are millions of people like me who are doing the same thing and from personal observation I think most liberals and democrats are really closet racist.
