Most modern auto detergents work fine at 40 degrees C (104 degrees F). As body temperature is 37 degrees C and I presume you don't take the T-shirt off at night after sweating a bit and have a T-shirt coloured torso, 40 degrees is almost certainly fine for washing in.

All that said, for definition purposes, in a washing machine, "cold" is probably defined as less than 30 degrees.

Cold Wash

"Machine wash cold" simply means to be sure you set the water temperature of your washing machine to Cold when washing your T-shirt. If you use any setting other than Cold (even the Warm setting), your T-shirt will stain the other clothes it is being washed with and over time your shirt's color will fade noticeably.

The lowest temp you have on the washer. I tend to wash new t-shirts first by hand to see if the dye runs.
If the dye runs a lot I wash it another couple of times by hand. Then the t-shirt gets shoved in with my normal wash which washes at a 40 C

Hope this helps. :-)

I wash for 4 people I can't be bothered washing everything exactly as it says on the label. Think I have ruined 2 items in 20 years.

i cant believe some of the answers you have had do people not do their own washing. cold wash is usually 30 but some machines only have 40. 40 should not do it any harm but if you are really concerned about it hand wash it and then you really cant go wrong
