If you are referring to the revolutionary war there are two possible answers to your question. There was a belief back then that black slaves were ignorant savages who weren't fully human and therefore not entitled to the same life, liberty and pursuit of happiness that the rest of the white European citizens of the colonies. The law at the time stated that a slave was considered to be half a person. It's stupid and wrong but that's the way it was. On the other hand there were actually quite a few slave owners that saw slavery for what it was, an evil an inhumane practice that should be abolished. But they knew that the laws weren't likely to change anytime soon and felt the best way to protect some of the slaves was by employing some of their own and treating them like human beings.

Slave owners didnt fight for liberty or at least from what I've learned in school. That is the reason why the Confederate and the union went to war because of slavery and because the union wanted freedom for all.

because they had no way of fihgting or they would of used anything to fight for liberty now do you get the picture

They wanted to form a nation that it is legal to have slaves.
