I'm a die hard anime fan as well and personally I think that certain ones can get to be equal with japanese anime itself. True the japanese tend to have the greater experience in creating anime because that's what 70 years of their carton experience denotes. But also you have new creators coming out of the woodwork creating anime's on par with experienced anime creators. (Aside from miyazaki)
(Oh and a side note, big O was originally produced in japan, at teh least the first season was. The second season wasn't as far as I know.)
You can't say because of cultural differences it wont be as good. The cultural references in the anime are minor things. And truthfully they aren't what define the anime. True japan may be a little more lax on what they can show in cartoons but seriously what defines it is the story line, characters, and animation.
Not to beat a dead horse but if you look at avatar: the last airbender, find another anime or show that has been created that actually takes the step's it has. Look beyond the typical "one eprson" can save the world cliche because that's common for many anime's and cartoons. Not only have they created a fantasy world all on it's own but they've taken something I have yet to see in a show. Being able to bend elements.
The characters are very memorable, it has children's and adult humor, not to mention the story line isa actually good because it follows a main plot rather than just having a new one every episode.(the curse of almost all american shows)
Again I am a hardcore anime fan (GITS pwns all anime) but I will admitt that there are a very select few american made animes that really stack up to the definition and captivation that an anime should have.

No, American "anime" isn't as good as what I consider real anime (Japanese). And yes...I am one of those die hard fans.
I think the cultural differences will always keep American anime from reaching the level of Japanese anime. The humor is obviously quite different and I really enjoy the Japanese sense of humor and watch some series specifically because of that...I LIKE nose bleeds! I also love mecha and how those story lines develop. The interactions between males and females in series is frequently different to the interaction you see in American cartoons, anime, etc.
I think that it is that cultural difference that allows the Japanese to write the storylines they do...so that isn't something that can easily (if ever) be duplicated by Americans.

The only American anime that comes to mind is Avatar: The last airbender, and The Boondocks.

I think so, if you can draw it good, get a 'japanese counsellor' in helping you plot the story America can make it big. But who cares? I'm from the island of Jamaica, and I wish to draw anime, I plan to go to Japan for art lessons and start a show I've been thinking of, by the way I'm just twelve, plenty of time to go to japan and train up my skills.
I hate people calling anime 'gay' in a bad way (comedy is good way not "This shows stinks on ice") i want to create a show that nobody will think of that. As long as you put your mind to it, America can accomplish these things (And so can the world!).
Anyone out there who wants to tell me anything?

The stories in Japanese Anime are more serious, more like dramas. Take Fullmetal Alchemist as an example. It wasn't all goofy crazy wize cracks, it was real drama, suspence, like puting real life and a fantasy story together.
Avatar is silly crazy and has that stereotypical anime-has-to-be-big-heads-and -crazy-sayings-with-elemental powers. it's the closest to REAL anime as america may ever get! but on the other hand... it makes i good american cartoon (yes that is all it shall be to me a dead, lifless, dramaless, silly, crazy, no good, cartoon)

I think you're comparing apples and oranges. Honestly, most of the american anime just doesn't have stories I'm interested in. Now, some of the manga I actually enjoy and I think it's just as good, but in a totally different way.

I'm pretty sure that Avatar: The Last airbender is the only American anime that I've ever seen that is close to the level of anime.
I really can't think of any others.

The way they draw characters, and how Japanese anime have more.... this century vocabulary... While American anime.... isn't all that interesting. Too american, and not enough imagination. I mean.. Demons and monsters are cool. Teenage superpowered school peoples are interesting.
