My youngest has just started secondary school, we have had a few teething problems with him being in the right place at the right time, and getting his head around the volume of homework etc. I have just found out his class are on reception duty, this means he misses the last lesson/s of the day (Great for kid, missing lessons!) to help the reception area of the school with 'Jobs' that may need doing, yesterday he was shredding rubbish. If the school receptionist/secretaries are short staffed they should get a temp in! He missed Science to do this, and now has to find out whether he missed any homework set that lesson.....er am i mad, but should he not have been in the lesson anyway?

I am 36, so let me think how many years back this was...23 years ago when i was at middle we used to do this reception sitting, but we had all our work set for the day. You were partnered up, and a desk was situated at the entrance of the school, and we would meet and greet, answer the phone, but we mever missed a lesson. I am going back to the days then when homework was 20 minutes a week!.. I have spoken to the Education Authority today and they say they don't have any powers...schools manage themselves, sounds to me like they are passing the buck!

my daughters school does this but makes sure the class interupted isnt going to be direly important. Our school believes not only teaching the kid their studies-but helping them become responsible-helpful "citizens" I love it - every class has one community service project, and I think that is setting up good morals for the kids. I would talk to your school and find out why they thought he could miss science that day.

You need to call the Administration building and speak to someone in charge there. This SHOULD NOT be happening to your child at school.
Call the school board too. Let them know what is going on. You can also call the state and fill them in on it too.
Meanwhile, go to the school and tell them that they need to find someone else to shred these papers. Tell them YOU want YOUR child in science class, not shredding papers. YOU ARE THE PARENT AND YOU HAVE THE FINAL SAY!

That is sooo stupid. He should not be missing any classes or getting lesser educated than other schools or classes to 'shred paper' my schools messed up too.

Yes they are and we as parents need to take the control back. We pay the teachers salaries.

I agree with you and I too am so frustrated with our education system.

If I were you I would insist that he stay in class. You have every right!

Good luck.

You need to go to the school and fight for what you believe is right
