Leave it out in a warm spot for a few minutes or roll it into a ball with your hands.

I've had a problem with very hard modeling clay in the past. Here is what I suggest. If it is a small amount of clay, work it in your hands for a short time to soften it. However if you have more clay, you will hurt your hands if you try to soften it all. Try putting it on a plate in the microwave for a short time, just to warm it. That will make it softer and more malleable. Good luck!
