A sofa is the soft squishy thing most of us have in our homes. The word settee comes from the word settle which is an old name for a hard wooden seat. Basically, yes there is a difference.

A settee was originally a chair for several people, and had a high back and legs, much like a single chair.

A couch was always something to lie down on.

A sofa is an overstuffed settee, built with low legs, springs to hold up cushions, etc. It's more like a bed in construction.

A settee is smaller than a loveseat and usually has a high back. Perfect piece of furniture for an office. A sofa seats 3-4 and is more overstuffed with a wider seating area.
