Both really,

You don't necessarily ovulate at the set day each cycle, this can vary. The 8-16 is just when you "potentially" could get pregnant taking into factor this variance.

The 4 days of fertility revolve around when you ovulate.

Hope this difference makes sense!

It varies from woman to woman.
Example: You and a friend may both have 28 day cycles..however your luteal phase is different from hers, so you both ovulate on different days. (Luteal Phase is the time from when you ovulate to when you get your next period) Some girls have longer luteal phases and some shorter. Textbook case says 14 days. Some women have 10 or 11. Or it can even be different in every cycle. So this being, the actual day you ovulate would be different if your luteal phase is different. So your source says 8-16 just to cover all areas for a wider range of women. I would say 8 days is quite early for a 28 cycle .. however it is likely to be "fertile" several days before you actually ovulate (because of factors of how long sperm survives, and cervical mucus, and all that lovely stuff)

It varies for sure! The theory is that a woman ovulates approximately 13 days BEFORE her next period is due, not after her period starts. I tried to get pregnant for years, used OPK's, temped and even saw 2 diffrent specialists. And they couldn't figure out why I wasnt ovulating, based on labs they preformed around cycle day 20-22. Anyways to make a long story short, I am pregnant now and got pregnant around cycle day 20+! My periods are very regular, 28-31 days. So that's normal. I'm just one of those who ovulate later in her cycle. Your best bet would be to buy some ovulation prediction kits and take them the whole month through just to see when you're ovulating! You could have a short or long luteal phase throwing off your calculations a bit!

There is no set time when a women will definitely be fertile. In general, the few days around day 14 will be the most fertile (because few women are the textbook case that ovulate exactly on the 14th day). Just as cycles tend to vary so can ovulation. You can ovulate during your period or even multiple times a month!

It all depends on when you ovulate. Even if you have a 28 day cycle, that doesn't necessarily mean you will ovulate on day 14. Your best days for conception are the 2 days prior to ovulation and the day of. You need to find out whey YOU ovulate. To do this you can use ovulation kits or chart your daily basal body temperature. You can learn more about charting your bbt and chart it for free at fertilityfriend.com. It also has information about other signs of ovulation to check for and information about conception. There is no perfect formula for ovulation calendars because everyone is different. Educating yourself and learning about your own body is very useful to get success in conception. You can also try having sex every other day from day 8 to day 22 of your cycle. This will increase your chances of conceiving if you can't determine your ovulation time. Best of luck.
