Title search checks for things like back taxes and other Liens against the title. It will also show what is needed to clean up the problems and the seller has the choice of either paying off liens and mortgages etc or you can accept the title with these problems or you can reject and not close unless the seller clears up the title...
Names and dates of ownership tranfers in the chain of title you would have to have a abstract run and most title companies that research titles don't do this much anymore but you can ask for extra charge they may...

A title search is a pretty broad term that can encompass a lot of different specific searches regarding the title of the home. You can order separate title searches of a property, instead of ordering a complete title insurance report. The title insurance report contains all of the relevant information regarding the title, as well as an offer to insure the title against certain claims and inaccuracies.
Ordering a chain of title will show who has owned the property, dates of acquisition, and dates of title transfer. This is probably the search you are referring to.
A lien search shows what current and past liens affect the property. It will show the original amount of the lien, but it will not show the current amount due on the lien to pay it off in full.
You can also order a title company to provide you with the legal description of the property, which is a more in-depth description than just the address.

A title search typically tells you who is currently on record as the owner of a property and who the lienholders are. In order to obtain all of the transfer of ownership (depending on how far back you want to go) you would want to get a chain of title.
My suggestion is to contact your local title company or the registrar of deeds in the county where the property is located. Where I live you can look at my city's tax bills online and it shows who the current owner is, when they took title, and how title was transferred (warranty deed is typical in the sale of a home -- could also be quit claim deed or other methods).

In the Philippines, to search for a title, one need to go the Registry of Deeds of the city or town who has jurisdiction over the property. he should show the Title number and the name. However, if that is not available, go to Assessors office of the city or town and ask for a copy of tax declaration of the property you are looking for. Give the name of the owner. The title number of the property is shown in the tax declaration. get the number and go to Registry of Deeds with the title number and the name of the owner. Without these information, it will be hard to search for a title.

Yes, and then when you have it looked over, they'll be able to find if there's any outstanding liens. Fascinating to read the history of a house.
