I just bought a house that has a heat pump (only electric service to house). The heat pump and air handler are both original...23 years old. I am getting ready to request estimates to replace the heat pump. Should I also be replacing the air handler?

May I suggest you check in to the "Mr. slim " by Mitsubishi. We replaced our heat system with this system. We have saved so much money and it is a much cozier feel.

You don't have to, but to get the increased efficiency that has occured during the past 23 years you may wish to consider replacing both. You've gotten good service out of them if they've lasted this long. Ask your HVAC vendors to quote you the heat pump with an option to replace the air handler at the same time, you may get some savings in labor costs to go ahead and do both at the same time.

If you are thinking of changing your outside unit. Its going to be very hard to match the system with your existing system which is I'm sure less than 10 SEER. All new equipment is rated 13 SEER and your air handler will have to be replaced to match this new equipment's SEER ratings.. You may also consider switching to electric or gas heat vs having a heat pump you may see a decrease in you utility bill and heat pump aren't very good when temps get really cold.

two reasons you should replace both .no1.both where installed the same time .and the air handler works only 3/4 of the time that still means approx 16 years no 2.the heat pump that will be installed will require more coil surface to bolster it new /higher effenticy so,without the new air handler you wont realize any monetary gain

yes replace both. get as high efficiency rating as you can afford....at least 16 seer trane goes all the way to 19 seer and DONT get a r22 system. in two years theyll be obsolete and by 2010 the r22 freon will be getting very expensive.

go with a 410a system. get a high seer rating, stay away from goodman, nordyne, weatherking, and bryant. shop by warranties. trane comes with a 10 year parts warranty, and so do some of the other top end systems

hope i helped,
possum.

ps,
what macine are you replacing? 23 years is a good run

Yes it's better to replace both at the same time. being 23 years old you know it will breakdown on a nite that it's zero out and can't find any repair part's for air handler.

Yes to match the efficiecy of the new outdoor unit which is 13 seer(seasonal energy efficiency ratio) you will need to change the air handler. the new indoor coil will be larger as will the outdoor coil .This is how the new efficiency is accomplished for the most part.
