Why does everyone hate the Leafs and Toronto in general?

This is what I answered in a similar question:

I equate the Leafs to the Dallas Cowboys in the 70s. They were "America's Team". They were on television every Sunday ( when there were only 3 networks and no cable ).

The Leafs are on every Saturday on CBC's HNIC, so they get similar exposure.

Like the Dallas Cowboys, you either love them or hate them.

I don't hate the leafs, but you got to admit they are chokers in the playoffs even with the kind of line up they have had in the past. The Habs on the other hand I love, because they are a .500 team give or take for the last decade so not many teams in the league think much of them anymore but they have been doing great in the playoffs the last few years with some amazing games and a lot of drama. Remember the hit on Zednik a couple of years go, then threats trown back and forth? Koivu return from cancer and lead Habs in the playoffs? Anyways this season I'd like to see a canadian team win the cup, the Flames and Oilers were close in recent years, someone needs to finish it.

Hating the Leafs, because they put out only a mediocre hockey team.. They are an entertainment business first, aqnd as long as fans fill the rink and buy the merch. they are happy. If the management had the passion of the fans we wouldn't hear " Wait until next year" Havent even been to the final round since the old 6 team league, and although they are contenders until november, they won't be there again this year.

Don't hate the Leafs, but let's not hate the truth here. They are pretty much the Philadelphia Flyers north of the border. Like the Flyers, they are a team that hasn't adapted to the new NHL game of the post-lockout that cracks down on obstruction and opens up ice.

Too freakin egotistical... All we ever here about is how good this team is, and only because they won a few games. Its just like what HABITANT said, you get a few wins and then you start talking Stanley Cup. It makes me wonder when everyone will shut up, and at least wait until the midpoint of the season to start talking Stanley. Be mindfull that this is coming from a Stars fan, and the Stars have only lost one game. The Stars had over 30 shots last night, and only gave up 2 goals. Had it not been for Nabokov's startling performance, we could have burried the Sharks. After winning most of our first 5, and only losing by 2 in a close game, you don't here me going and saying the Stars are gonna win it all.

Also, that's not the only reason your too high on yoursevles. The Leafs Always act like they're better than everyone else.Just like the Detroit Red Wings, both the Wings and the Leafs have seen better days. That's the reason we hate you. You'd have to live in a really small universe, for Toronto to be the center of it.

The Habs are the best Canadian team( pun intended ), and I think they are more classy than the make beliefs. They have their name on Lord Stanley's Cup more than anybody else, and their fans have enough humility to not label other team's fans as less than themselves.

My advice is that, if you people want to stop being hated, then you need to do a few things first. Shut up, and quit acting like your better than everyone else.

I live in Toronto and we are NOT the centre of the universe. We're the centre of the HOCKEY universe. And I'm with the haters of this city. We're basically Canada's New York complete with rude, self-centred people. Go Leafs!

Not everyone hates the Leafs. Those so-called Leafs fans who jump ship and hop on the Ottawa bandwagon are not true Leafs fans. My first favourite NHL team was actually the Detroit Ding-a-lings but sometime around 1992, I saw the light! Watching Leafs hockey on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday nights is like a family reunion at my house.

Michigan hates Toronto because they are taking our garbage. The rest of you Leafs bashers can take our garbage too! Ha-ha!

Because the fans poison every arena. They only choose to like the team because usually their daddy and grandfather and uncle and brother like them. They are comparable to the in-breeding that goes on in Alabama and the other Southern States...!

They all go to Tim Horton's faithfully, 6-7 times a week and spend $25 a week there. They show up at work and talk about how awesome their team is when it's extremely early in the season. They get all their wins when other teams don't care - i.e. teams like NJ know that there are 82 games and know when to turn it on to make the playoffs, Darcy Tucker, they always get lucky with their goaltending -- all the way back to Feeldicks Potvin, they think they are Canada's team because they have the largest population base -- they can't beat Buffalo on their worst day, and they get pissed when a Buffalo team does good because they claim "we'll never hear the end of it!"
Wrong. If the Leafs ever won, we would never hear the end of it. Generally, they are all followers. Plus that city is a joke. SPREAD THE HELL OUT. BIGGEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD AND THEY HAVE TO MOVE THERE. GO TO SASKATCHEWAN AND GET OFF THE HIGHWAY!!!

I use to like all Canadian teams till........(I'm Canadian and this was in Canada).
When I was in jail many moons ago I got bugged by leaf fans in there and it gave me a deep hatred for the Toronto Maple leafs.
Bad enough being in jail and in a western jail for a substantial time but having to listen to ramblings of Easterners crowding up our penal system with leaf crap just takes it a step to far.
