The ancient Egyptians are indeed a semitic people, and thus dark, but not what you would you call black.
The Pharoes did employ black mercenary worriors from other lands.

They were mainly "indigenous North Africans" with a slight mix of "Near Eastern populations"
A 2006 bioanthropological study on the dental morphology of ancient Egyptians shows dental traits most characteristic of indigenous North Africans and to a lesser extent Near Eastern populations. The study also establishes biological continuity from the predynastic to the post-pharaonic periods. Among the samples included is skeletal material from the Hawara tombs of Fayum, which was found to most closely resemble the Badarian series of the predynastic.[2][3] A study based on stature and body proportions also suggests that Nilotic or tropical body characteristics were also present in some later groups, as the Egyptian empire expanded southward during the New Kingdom
In c. 450 BCE, Herodotus wrote, "the Colchians are Egyptians... on the fact that they are dark-skinned (melanchrôs) and wooly-haired (oulothrix)" (Histories Book 2:104). Melanchros was also used by Homer to describe the sunburnt complexion of Odysseus (Od. 16.176).
Although analyzing the hair of ancient Egyptian mummies from the Late Middle Kingdom has revealed evidence of a stable diet,[9] mummies from circa 3200 BC show signs of severe anemia and hemolytic disorders.[10][11][12]

Most Egyptians, especially in the north, were Semitic, with mixtures of many other cultures, such as ancestors of Tuareg (a racial/ethnic combination of Black and White-Semitic), Hittite, Persian and many others. However, the only (mostly) Black RULERS of Egypt were the Nubians. Before that, Nubia had been a conquered province of Egypt, then rebelled an formed its own state, and finally united with Egypt around 950 BCE. (1)
According to one article in Wikipedia (a good, extensive one): "Currently, most Western mainstream scholars regard the ancient Egyptians as being a mixture of Black African and White (Semitic, and non-Semitic Caucasoid elements). This scholarly consensus is shown in the modern, scientific attempt to reconstruct the facial likeness of Tutankhamun that appeared on the cover of National Geographic in 2005. Similar to the general impression of Latinos (with the Semites fulfilling the role of the Native Americans), the Western mainstream scholarly opinion (not including the Afrocentric views) is that the Egyptians were a primarily light-skinned to brown-skinned group of people (like most African Americans) with features that resembled more a multiracial society leaning more towards a Caucasian appearance than a ******* or Black African appearance." Probably pretty close. According to ancient history the ancient Egyptians were so stupid they would just throw dead bodies out into the desert. It took the Ethiopians to teach them to either bury or burn their dead so as to prevent diseases and plagues from becoming rampant. And I am sure that after time they intermarried so much that while the present day Egyptians aren't totally black they are darker than when they began as a civilization.

In a scientific point of view, the origins of all human race is black. It is because it is 'said' that the 'first' humans originated from Inner Africa. Their skin pigment only start to change when they reach different parts of the world.
However, it is my personal believe that Ancient Egyptians are a mixed race, like Singapore. Judging from the geographical location of Egypt and the ancient paints of Pharos, I persume that it is a mixture of Arabs & Blacks.
Cheers....hmmm...maybe 'National Geographic' in SCV can provide some answers....

First of all, African is not a race, it is a continent. Same thing with Asia. Some answers seemed confused on this point. Africa is full of races, at least 5 before Europeans colonized it. Asia also has many different races. Obviously as pointed out, Egypt is at a cross roads and its people are a combination from people in both continents and possibly Europe as well. Certainly murals like this one seem to indicate a mixture

The ancient Egyptians painted themselves, and they didn't paint themselves black. This does not mean that there was no sub-Saharan influence (particularly Nubian) upon them, either culturally or genetically.
The only question is, How much? The ancient genetic stock of Egypt has been mixed with that of all her conquerors, including the Sea People, the Persians, the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, French and British.
They're a Heinz 67 nation if there ever was one.
