It's not so much that our society is inherently evil. Rather, people are conditioned to behave a certain way which is contrary to what they really want. Who does this conditioning, and to what end? Consider your "White picket fence, dog, and three kids" scenario. What you are describing is the typical suburban family. The central theme of such a family is consumption of goods: A new car every few years, frozen pizza, cable television, cordless phones, appliances, the latest fashions in the closet, the latest video games in the rec room...the focus is to buy, and keep on buying. The currency one imagines when envisioning such an "Eutopian" life is credit cards and loans. Mastercard, American Express, Visa all come to mind. Live it up now, pay for it later. Sounds great, doesn't it? Unfortunately, it's not as advertised.
The reality is, you have a few people in our society that are rich and powerful. They control the media, which includes newspapers, TV and radio broadcasts, cable TV and telephone providers...and we look upon these companies as "Good" because they provide us with something called "Gainful employment." They pay us decently, but then turn around and sell us "The Lifestyle." Once you start into this lifestyle, your debt creeps up. You buy the house, furnishings, and car all on credit. You get hooked on the convenience of popping your already prepared dinner in the microwave and watching your favourite shows. You start to define who you are with brands. You don't even notice the debt that keeps creeping up, until it's too late. Eventually, you're working just to pay off the interest in what you owe. Putting in overtime. Selling your investments. Marrying a spouse so they can shoulder some of the burden with their overtime.
In reality, we're stuck with cheap houses and cheap cars that eventually fall apart by the time they're paid off. Same deal with the appliances and entertainment system. Even our furniture becomes outdated, if its cheap sawdust partical board construction doesn't give out first. We end up giving the best part of our lives to these big companies, owned by rich and powerful people, so we can end up in a nursing home provided we manage to survive that first heart attack. Life does indeed become meaningless, because so many people have bought into living for the moment. Live it up today, they say, because you may not be here tomorrow; while all that overtime, junk food and stress pushes you one step closer to that heart attack.
There is still good in our society; that good is that there is still a choice. You get to choose whether you want to live the american lie and live it up now, or pursue something more rewarding. Life really is what you make it, once you pull yourself away from all the advertising and media hype.

Money and Greed, Money and Greed...etc
It is very sad. I have a 2 1/2 year old son, and I don't even know what the state of this money driven society will be like by the time he can understand things like that. This world revolves around the CORPORATE dollar. It is not the mom and pop store on the corner that has driven greed to the front of society. It is the corporations always wanting more and more and more profit. How many billions in profit is enough? When a company makes 10 billion in profit, does it really have to strive for 15 billion in the next year. Do they really have to cut jobs and hike up the prices to keep 150 shareholders in a room happy? I think not, but it really doesn't matter what you and I think, because we have no voice that can be heard by the Corporations, and they wouldn't listen anyway. The government (makes billions on corporate taxes) has created so many laws to protect corporations, and so many more, that get exploited by corporations, that everything they do is Technically legal. Even though it destroys society, puts people on the street, creates more harm than good on any given day. No one is willing to stand up and stop them. If I could, I would. But I would be considered a crackpot, and thrown in jail probably. So I sit by and watch the world crumble, and hope that maybe someday everyone will get fed up of being pushed around by corporations.
Should it really cost $30 a month in bank fees to have a bank account? To give someone YOUR money that they then use to make themselves more money, and CHARGE YOU FOR IT! Banks make 12 billion in profit every year, with the money we give them to hold on to. I don't remember ever signing anything that says the bank can use 1 penny of my money for their personl gain, and yet they do and they don't even have to ask...and whatever Pathetic interest they offer could accumulate for 100 years and still wouldn't cover 1 years worth of bank fee's.
Something really needs to be done...

Basically you've hit it, you're just not finishing the connection. Essentially we each value different things, but overall society has said there are certain things we are supposed to want--specifically the family in the nice house with at least two great cars and so on. Out of fear that we'll be ostracized if we don't attain these things, we start doing anything and everything necessary to get them. Now for most of us this is just abandoning our dreams and doing what is necessary to make the money to get these things.
Now on its own it is stressful enough, but there are a limited number of resources and those resources are getting smaller all the time. But our expectations of ourselves are getting bigger all the time, so we attack our competition (other people). Some who feel they are incapable of doing it legitimately switch to crime to do it so they can take what they need rather than earn it.

People strongly believe that they can get any thing and every thing if they have money with them. That's the root cause for all the evil state of the society. By the time they realize that money can't do many things, there are so many other people who start thinking as they were doing earlier. Ultimate reality is - Money can buy the bed but not the sleep, money can buy the medicine but not the health, - - - - -- - - - - there is a big list of such issues, you know that.

I know I will make enemies with my response, but i believe the radical religious movement in this country has a great deal to do with the intolerance and blind bigotry which has become an acceptable way of life among so many Americans.

From the core outwards, so to speak. We are in the ending times of the Iron Age, the darkest and most Spiritually limited period of four cycles of time. Chances are it will become much worse before we see improvement, and the improvement may come as a consequence of substantial chaos.
With the rise of negativity, those things that depend upon a lessening of morality and ethical standards will increase. Those whose psychological cravings are satisfied through destruction of anything that would restrict their cravings are allowed to do what satisfies them. This would be those in the ACLU, and others whose fear of personal responsibility causes them to resist anyone and any thing that promotes "personal responsibility".
Those whose psychological self-view is very negative will be allowed, given the laws or lack thereof, to act out their view of self as bad: bar room dancers, strippers, lap dancers, prostitutes, etc.
Again the rise in homosexuality is allowed by a general lessening of moral values... in my opinion, the natural result of 40 years of Liberal control of Congress, and the staffing of judge-ships around the nation with those whose fear of "personal responsibility" causes them, due to Scotoma [blind spot] to be unable to "see" evil and degeneracy as something harmful to society.
The Iron age is almost like a cloud of negativity slowly covering the entire planet, and the people individually and collectively are being driven by internal urges that in another Age would not be allowed to manifest, and those with them would not be allowed to incarnate.
It is a difficult time to live for many, for others it is a dream come true. The current upcoming election is a snapshot of what we are all experiencing. Those whose moral vision still perceives evil as evil against those who are unable to see evil as evil, but see anyone who would seek to impose personal responsibility as Satan... as the President was called by the Dictator.
For the wise, stay inside at night. Keep to your Friends and family. Protect yourself, and prepare for rough times ahead. And mostly tie yourself to your faith with zeal and determination. To die with God in ones conscience is to be reborn as Man, in the next Age, which is the Golden Age, which is the most Spiritually enlightened of the four Ages.
Peace
This is the time when those with faith will be tested to the limit, and those whose hatred of God will seemingly have free reign...but do not forget that the eyes of Karma miss nothing. I can only imagine the eons in hell so many will have to suffer for the "good times" they are experiencing now. Poor Souls. But these will be the Souls of the future Ages, who will be the puritans.... because of the intense suffering they have gone though in so many different hells.
