I can understand why a person would think or feel that these words are lies - given the definition of the word lie. It may be even be proper to say that either word is misused, but to call those words (the words themselves) lies, is incorrect. In order to be sorry you would have to be willing to see that the other person's opinion or argument carries more validity than your own. This entails having an open mind, being analytical and objective. In order to be thankful, you need to be appreciative of what someone has done or said. If you hold the opinion that Thank You and Sorry are lies, then you should examine your life. Do you have faith? Are you involved in a reciprocating love relationship? "Thank you" is a polite, socially acceptable way of saying I appreciate the gesture. The wonderful thing about it is if you use it, so do others around you.

I never could get the hang of saying "........ out." on the radio. When my conversation was done, I'd automatically say Thank You. Within a month of starting that job, it seemed everyone was saying Thank You at the end of radio conversations. It still meant "......... out", but was a much nicer way of doing it. I don't think anyone considered it empty.

"Sorry" has been overused, often with no sincerity, but that doesn't mean it's empty. "Love you" is just as overused and much more abused.

Yes, I can understand this point of view. Often when we exchange such words it is a matter of common courtesy. Though our true feelings towards the matter are often quite the opposite. Most of us are sorry because we do not want to prolong an argument or we seek to prevent one. Thank you on the other hand allows us to satisfy our personal obligation in knowing that we did the 'right thing.' Even though we don't really mean it. This is much like sorry as it will prevent a conflict.

I will note that there are times when we are truly sorry or thankful but those occasions are not as numerous as people lead each other to believe.
